There are over 1100 online dating sites and hundreds of social networking sites, but only Mix can put you in a group mixer tonight, where you can meet new people in-person. Mix give you an instant social outlet, and simplifies your life by eliminating the need for you to schedule in advance and coordinate with other people.
No. There is no charge to join or use Mix and there are no monthly or annual fees.
Currently drink mixers are being offered every Thursday and Saturday nights; and coffee mixers on Sunday afternoons. However, as Mix grows we will be adding more nights, so contact us and let us know which night of the week you would like to see Mix add next.
Currently, all the mixers will take place in bars located in Boston, Cambridge, Brookline and Somerville. So people coming in from outside the city will need to select a starting location and travel distance that puts them in range of the venues in these cities. As Mix grows we will be adding venues in other areas of metro Boston including the suburbs….and we also plan to add more major city metro areas in the future, so contact us and let us know what cities you would like to see Mix add next.
The bars will be popular neighborhood bars, tourist bars, and micro-brews. As Mix grows we will add mixers at more trendy upscale bars, as well as, at less expensive college and beer bars so that you will even have more ways in which to tailor your mixer experience.
After each mixer you attend Mix will send you a feedback form to help you improve your next mixer experience. On that form you will be able to link yourself to people you met in the mixer that you believe have the same taste in friends as you do. Then the next time Mix puts you in a mixer it will give priority to your "affinity network" when selecting other participants. Therefore, the more mixers you attend, the larger this affinity network can become, and the more apt you are to meet the type of people you find interesting.
Our clustering engine is designed to target a mixer size of 6 with 3 males and 3 females. However, Mix needs the flexibility to form mixers of 5 or 7 too because we can’t assure that we will always receive an even number of male and female reservations within a given geographical area. For mixers of 5 and 7 there will never be less than 2 and 3 people of the same sex confirmed for a mixer, respectively. Since Mix encourages people to bring friends without having to sign up, these additional participants can cause a more lopsided gender ratio for certain mixers, but that’s a good thing since you would be meeting more people.
Note that Mix may find it necessary to form a few mixers with just 4 participants so that everyone can participate. Try to understand that we are doing our best to put you in a mixer and get you out tonight.
Part of the sign up process involves providing your age. Mix uses a unique approach to age grouping by overlapping age brackets. Therefore, everyone is eligible for at least two age groups. This provides flexibility for you to change up the crowd you meet at each mixer and ensures that those you will meet are in a similar age bracket.
No, it would be impossible to put together a same-day, geographically convenient mixer where all participants selected the others as the people they would like to meet. Look at it as if you’re going to a party…half the fun is meeting people you never expected to meet. We also encourage people to bring a friend, so there should be more people attending than appear in your Mixer Confirmation….serendipity is a very cool way to meet people and people bringing their friends just adds to the possibilities.
No, Mix selects the venue after it clusters the participants so that it can minimize everyone’s travel distance. This is what really makes Mix unique and allows us to provide you with its real time same day service that doesn’t require you to plan ahead.
No, as long as you make a reservation before the start of the mixer. Because Mix accumulates reservations throughout the day and performs the clustering at 4 PM, if you make a reservation after 4 PM you will be added to the nearest mixer that has already been formulated, but your location would not be factored into the selection of the venue. If you do you make a very last minute reservation (after 4 PM), please allow yourself enough travel time so that you can arrive before the mixer ends. When you make an online reservation after 5 PM you will immediately be linked to the mixer confirmation page for the mixer you have been assigned to.
To maximize the actual attendance at a mixer and minimize the possibility of someone cancelling out, you can only make a reservation the day of the mixer.
Absolutely! That’s what Mix is all about, and we strongly encourage you to bring a friend. They don’t even need to sign up. The more the merrier, so grab a friend and make it a better experience for everyone.
No, that would not be practical because we would never know until the last minute how many mixers there will be and where they will be located. Mix also has no desire to influence the spontaneity of the mixer participants.
There are three methods to identify the other Mix participants: (1) visual identification; (2) physical table markers; and (3) text messages you can broadcast to the other attendees through Mix. Some or all participants will supply photos to Mix that will be included in your online Mixer Confirmation. Physical table markers…like a bar napkin or a print-out of your online Mixer Confirmation rolled up and placed in a bottle or hanging over the side of the table can be used as well. In addition, all participants will be able to text Mix with a short message when they arrive, and in that message you can tell everyone where you are located in the bar or what you are wearing, etc. You can also use the Mix Text service to let the other participants in your mixer know that you might be arriving late. Mix will broadcast your message to the other participants in your mixer without divulging your cell phone number.
You can text Mix by replying to one of our text messages or by addressing your text to 68317.
Mix is completely mobile now! You can make a reservation, receive your Mix confirmation, and communicate with your MixMates all by text message...so there is no need to wait by your computer. Make a reservation from your cell phone by texting 68317 with the word "mix". At 4pm (or drink mixers) or 2pm (for coffee mixers receive your Mix assingnment by text telling you where you're going to go and who you're going to meet. Then you can text Mix to send messages to other attendees about whether you have arrived, whether you are going to be late, what you're wearing, where you're sitting, etc. Mix relays these messages to the other participants without revealing your cell phone number!
Mix does not charge you for text messages but you will be responsible for text messages charged to you by your carrier.
No. Because Mix relays your messages, they will not see your phone number. Obviously, if you attend a mixer and another attendee gives you their phone number and you call or text them directly, they will see information associated with your phone.
No. Mix will email you a link to an online Mixer Confirmation with mixer logistics and attendee information. As long as you can get email after your mixer is confirmed, you will have all the information you need to attend. You will not be able to get the last minute text messages from other participants, but you should still be able to fully enjoy the Mix service.
Assuming you’ve reached this conclusion after you have received your Mixer Confirmation notice, it is likely that you made a snap judgment based on photos alone. We encourage you to be more open-minded, meet the other participants in-person, and treat everyone as you would like them to treat you. Although there may be no one you’re interested in potentially dating, they might know someone that’s a good match for you, they could be a good business contact, they could be your next invite to a party, etc….so relax, have a drink and get to know them.
There are a couple more points you should keep in mind…. Mix encourages people to bring a friend to the mixer (the more the merrier and they don’t even have to sign up), so there may be more people actually attending the mixer than there are listed on your Mixer Confirmation notice. Plus, by being associated with a group it is much easier to meet other people in the bar while you’re there.
In that situation, hang out in the bar area or somewhere that you can be easily spotted by other participants walking through the door. If you can, always try to bring a print-out of the online Mixer Confirmation with you so that you can identify those participants who have provided photos….better yet, just roll it up and hold it in your hand as an indicator to others that you’re with the Mix group. You can also broadcast a message to the other participants concerning your location, etc. by responding to your text message confirmation notice sent to you by Mix. Note that Mix uses double blind text communication so that no other users will ever be provided your phone number by Mix.
We strongly encourage people to attend mixers they have requested and that are confirmed by Mix, but have no control over their actions. The fact that most reservations will be made that same day minimizes the chance that something will come up to cause someone not to attend. However, stuff happens, so try to be forgiving and make the most of you mixer experience.
Note that Mix encourages everyone to bring a friend to the mixer (the more the merrier and they don’t even have to sign up), so there is just as much chance that there will be extra people there as there is that someone can’t make it.
As a courtesy to the other participants, if you can’t attend a mixer or will be arriving late please broadcast a text message to the other participants to inform them about your situation. To send a message to all of the other participants in your mixer just reply to the text confirmation Mix sent to you confirming your reservation, or send a text to 68317 with your message.
You provide your starting location, which can be home, work, or anywhere you choose. You also select a maximum travel distance. Mix selects mixer participants by geographically clustering them and selects a venue that minimizes the travel distance for all participants. While Mix is growing there may not be enough people in your preferred neighborhood to support a mixer. Therefore, you may be sent to another neighborhood, but we will try our best not to send you to a mixer outside your maximum travel distance.
Your departure location is where you leave from when you go to a mixer… you can input as many departure locations as you want, but typically your departure locations would include your home and work. When Mix clusters the reservations it selects a meeting venue to minimize everyone’s travel distance from their departure location. But Mix also lets you select any neighborhood to Mix in that you want...and you do this by inputting a different "departure location"…so try a different neighborhood for your next mixer…tired of the North End, then try the Back Bay!
Yes,your photo is required to make a Mix reservation because it simplifies lcoating the other mixer participants at the venue. When you attend a mixer you will be meeting people in-person, therefore you should be willing to share your photo with them in the online Mixer Confirmation that is posted a couple of hours prior to the mixer. The online Mixer Confirmation can only be viewed by the participants in your mixer. A photo is not required to join Mix or to list your profile in a Mix Group.
We try our best not to send you to a mixer outside your maximum travel distance, but if we do exceed that limit we will try to minimize it as much as possible. Also, please keep in mind that this distance is calculated "as the crow flies" so it’s possible that your actual mileage may be different.
One of Mix’s fundamental principals is to make your life simple. We don’t want you to have to spend a lot of time creating an extensive profile, and want to enable you to attend a mixer nearly effortlessly. Therefore, we only require information that allows us to arrange effective mixers. This includes your email address, birth month and year, gender, starting location, cell phone number, and some personal tidbits you provide about yourself that you don’t mind sharing as conversation starters. From the list of above information we provide, only your first name, last initial, gender, photo and conversation starters to the other mixer participants.
Your cell phone number is necessary so that Mix can send you a text message confirmation of the mixer logistics and to allow you to broadcast text messages to the other mixer participants. Note that all email communications and text messaging through Mix will be performed on a double blind basis so no other user will ever see your phone number or email address. If you don’t have text messaging capability, you will be emailed a link to an online Mixer Confirmation.
We are very concerned about protecting your privacy. Mix will not share your personally identifiable information with other organizations for their marketing or promotional uses without your prior express consent and we promise that we will not spam you or your friends. This link provides details on how we protect your privacy and other important information on how your information may be used so you should review this material. You should also read the terms of service for using the Mix website.
Mix sends small groups of people to public places so you should be at least as safe as entering a similar venue on your own. Also, Mix deletes from its database venues in some zip codes based on crime rates. However, your safety cannot be guaranteed by Mix and is your responsibility, so you should take appropriate precautions just like you would anytime you’re out in public on your own. Should you decide that a venue area does not look safe, then do not proceed.
The benefit of being out with a group is that peer pressure should prevail. However, if someone persists with poor behavior let him/her know that they are out-of-line and that you are uncomfortable. Mix has a "three strikes and you're out" policy. If Mix receives complaints from three different people, that person will be permanently removed from the Mix membership. If you feel that your personal safety is in danger, then immediately notify the management of the venue and do not leave the premises alone....call a cab and request that the venue management escort you to it.
